They say that if you could sum up Russian history in one sentence it would be: "And then it got worse." Whelp, it starts out with a Turkish woman getting beaten to death in the Cossack village that time forgot because she's Turkish/wears trousers/a witch. Then it got worse. Fortunately, that mostly applies to the bleak, bitter realism of e events in the narrative, not the quality of the story itself. That being said, I found the war-related parts of the story to be dry and hard going, hence the three stars.

I struggled to follow the politics and different characters. Before reading 'War and Peace' I had the benefit of watching the BBC series, which helped me visualise the characters.

While I was reading, I was thinking that we often like to give historical events a neat linear narrative, but this book embraces the messiness and the chaos and confusion of war.

In some ways this reminded me of 'Birdsong'.

Next level writing. In my opinion on par with Tolstoy. The author disappears behind his characters and settings. It is as if I can see and hear the Don rushing by. I’ve never observed the use of all 5 senses better than I’m this book.
I was taken for a ride as I read the book. By far one of my favorite Russian classics.
I didn’t know anything about Cossacks or their culture before reading. The perspectives of the characters offer unique insights into the First World War.
The raw, fiery, human emotions were refreshing. From the deepest love to the most vicious hatred. Well done.

I had heard of the word "Cossack" but I would have been hard pressed to say anything more about the matter before I read this book. I did go in not really knowing anything about the story or the author, or really about the Don either.

We get the Don Cossacks in peace, war, and revolutionary times as the world is changing in dramatic ways. For a world and time and people I know virtually nothing about this book managed to convey incredible life and vividness of character and location that absolutely grabbed me. A small detail or unpredictable action from a character would just make the scene come alive in ways that I don't often experience in novels. I'm not sure I always followed all the intricacies of the politics (and there's a lot of it) but I still followed the story lead on by the people. The smells of the steppes and the trenches are brought to your nose, the colour and the wind are there. And of course the grandfatherly Don flowing through time and lives.

(I have to say I am so, so grateful to feminism and what it has done for the lives of women. A lot of what the women go through is hard to read.)

Too long. This book is in 4 parts. Peace, War, Revolution and Civil War. It follows a bunch of sorta gross horny people who live in the Don valley (pretty much Ukraine). Starts pre WWI. People are in villages having affairs and arguing and eating carp. Then WWI. These guys have to fight in it but aren't super invested in it. Then the bolsheviks seize power and some of these Don folk are on their side and others side with the Whites. Brother ends up having to kill brother and it's sad. The end.
