if nobody got me, i know emily henry got me. once again this woman swoops in and saves me from a reading slump. normally i read her books in one sitting but this cold i’m dealing with had me finishing this book in roughly 24 hours. this book was so refreshing and fun and i enjoyed every second of reading it.

DNF at 82%. i couldn’t take it anymore. i simply could not take it anymore. this book is so bad. it’s horrendous. everyone that said this book was bad was absolutely correct. the amount of miscommunication that could’ve been cut out of this would’ve shortened it by at least 150 pages, i swear. violet and xaden have a reiteration of the same exact argument every two chapters. it’s actually unbelievable, incomprehensible, unfathomable how bad this book is after the general enjoyment i experienced reading the first one. and the first one wasn’t even that good, but i gave rebecca yarros the benefit of the doubt because creating a fantasy world is a huge undertaking. now she has no excuse. she is a BAD writer. there is no plot other than violet always thinking she’s right and always being the victim. all her badassery from book one is GONE. she’s reduced to whatever she is in this book and i can’t stand it. i’ll probably try to read onyx storm at some point, but it will be FAR into the future because right now even thinking about this stupid fourth wing world has me fuming.

this was a pretty decent third book. i have to say, despite my enjoyment of the plot, the second book was definitely my favorite. i liked how jackson dealt with pip’s trauma from the events of the second book and how it affects her behavior and changes her fundamentally while she’s still trying to grasp at the person she used to be. that was definitely my favorite aspect of this book. it was pretty easy for me to sus out who the DT killer was, so the second book once again prevails in terms of good mystery to me. this book just felt really chaotic and while i had a good time reading it it just felt like a lot of poorly controlled chaos at times, like to the point where i was ready for it to be over. pip had a crazy journey, but do i think she deserved that ending? i haven’t decided yet.

this was exactly what i expect in a sequel. the mystery was better, the twist was better, and the returning characters are still as lovable and iconic as they were in the first book. i enjoyed this more than the first book, actually. i thought it was structured better and the plot was more interesting. i’ll be going into the third book with higher expectations now, so i’m hoping it’ll live up to this book because it was just such a quick and fun read.

i really enjoyed this book and i’m already itching to see what happens in the sequels, so i’ll be jumping right in for sure. pip is a great main character, and actually reminded me of myself a little bit in terms of being such an overachieving student because you can’t allow yourself to settle for anything less. it was an easy read and didn’t really have me thinking much. it was a little too easy for me to guess who the perpetrators of the murder(s) were and i would’ve appreciated a little more mystery around it leading up to the reveal. but i enjoyed how quickly things picked up. the one thing i couldn’t let go, though, was the author’s use of british phrases and lingo said by people living in connecticut. it was really jarring and had me questioning whether i made up the american setting or not. i’m hoping that changes in the subsequent books, but if it doesn’t, my ratings might get lower on principle.

i struggled with this one. i got a little over halfway through and really started considering dnfing it, but since it’s the book that season three of the show is based on i pushed through and finished it. this was the first reacher novel that i have ever read and i think my review is based entirely on personal preference because the story itself was good and i enjoyed the mystery aspect of it, but i really could not get past how much i hated the writing style. every sentence felt fragmented and the dialogue left a lot to be desired. i wasn’t a fan of the romance aspect of it either; i felt that duffy was written a bit poorly and could’ve benefited from being treated more like the professional she is. i think my favorite thing about this book was the way the fight scenes were written, namely how the author described the physical effects of injuries. it was much appreciated attention to detail. i have a few other teacher novels, but if i ever read them, it will have to be a while from now because that was a rough read.

i am so conflicted about this book. first and foremost, the writing was so abysmal at times (paragraphs of exhausting exposition and nightmarish dialogue, to name a couple things) that i had to stop and reflect on why i was reading it. not to mention the fact that this has to be the worst take on enemies to lovers that i have ever seen, without question. just unbelievably unrealistic and made zero sense. when violet said she was in love with caden my eyes almost got stuck in the back of my head because to me their relationship was handled terribly. the fmc had a disability and i really liked how she handled it throughout the book because it made me appreciate her and her accomplishments a lot more; it takes a lot of strength to do what the cadets had to do in general, but with her disability it made her resilience and dedication commendable and i grew to like her a lot. i really enjoyed the dragons and the world that yarros built. of course it ends on a significant cliffhanger, and i can’t believe i’m saying this, but i definitely want to read the rest of the books in this series.

i am truly speechless upon completing this book. kuang is a masterful author and i can’t even begin to properly put together words that explain how good this book was. i was sucked into the narrative so quickly it really felt like i was at oxford, at babel, with robin and ramy and victoire and letty, and i was there watching it all unfold and go wrong and come to completion. i’m truly speechless and i wish i could say something succinct and scholarly about this book to match its vibe but i can’t because i’m too stunned by how incredible it was.

should i feel shame for not thinking twice before giving this 5 stars? because i do NOT. i would give this 5 stars again and again and again. i’m not the type of person to always grab a book because it looks/sounds interesting. i have to think about it. i have to consider. but when i saw this on the target bookshelf, something was telling me to get it, and so i did. and i am SO GLAD that i did. i can’t remember the last time a book made me gasp, bang my head against the cover, and tear up the way i did over this one. i will be thinking about this story and its beautiful prose for the rest of the year. the characters are incredible with undeniable chemistry, the grief and emotion is palpable, and i loved every second.
