I listened to this on audiobook and I’m not usually an audiobook girlie… I think I would’ve enjoyed this a lot more with a physical book because it’s reflective in nature and listening to someone else read it isn’t really conducive to reflection.

I listened to the audio version of this book and truly enjoyed the light hearted but very inspirational messages. It was a quick listen filled with gems that I replayed and wrote down to reference again later. The opening segment of the journal entries for each month of the year allowed the reader/listener to journey with the author and experience each season and their accompanying emotions as well as grow with the narrator. The essays that were included after the year of reflection provided more context and the questions posed are great journaling prompts for anyone who wishes to dive deeper.

As the title suggests, this audiobook by Brigid Lowry is about ways to be a kindler, gentler soul. If you're going through a tough time and have negative self-talk, this will serve as a wonderful reminder to be more gentle with yourself and others.

There's practical advice on how to go about doing so. That said, there's nothing earth shattering mentioned. So if you read self help books on the regular, this may likely feel like a repeat of advice you've heard before.

I'm grateful to Orange Sky for the advanced listener copy via the NetGalley app. The narration was perfect for the text. Very easy, relaxing listening! And the cover art is gorgeous.

Let me start by saying I don’t read a lot of spiritual works so I’m not sure my opinion on this should be given a lot of weight. That being said, I enjoyed listening to this book tremendously. The writing is comforting and delightful and the narration was warm and soothing. Lowry’s realistic attempts at implementing her spiritual practices during trying times made me feel seen. Over the last week it was a joy to listen to one of the many micro chapters of this book and smile. This will definitely be an audiobook I will want to revisit over and over. Would also make a great holiday gift!

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ALC.

Not much original thought here, though the delivery was quirky and fun. I resonated more with Anne Lamott and Shauna Niequist’s work. To be fair, I might have enjoyed this more as an eye-read vs. audible. Her random lists and musings would have seemed more like poetry and less like the narrator was reading from post-it notes stuck to her bathroom mirror in the night.

Thanks to NetGalley and Orange Sky Audio for an advanced listener copy in exchange for an honest review.

I received an advanced copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Publication date: October 26, 2021.

This collection of essays is a lovely reminder to not shy away from being kind to oneself and respect and value one’s current emotions. It’s fluid and easy-to-understand, and all the insights and pieces of advice are approachable and interesting.

However, this wasn’t a life-changing book, as it has the same advice other essay collections and non-fiction books offer. It was a good listen regardless, keeping me entertained and reminding me to enjoy the little things in life. I did like how it tackled a wide variety of topics, from dealing with stress to the wonders and implications of traveling.

I wished I had read it instead of listened since I could have annotated it to keep some of the reminders closer.

Through personal essays, the author helps us the reader think thoughtfully and understand the importance of self-care, being kind to yourself and realizing your emotions. This incredibly helpful book made me think into aspects of my life that I had not before. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the reminder to be kinder to myself and to focus on what is most important in my life.

The narration had a flow to it that was peaceful and heartfelt. It felt like talking with an old friend.

I want to thank NetGalley, Brigid Lowry and OrangeSky Audio for this audiobook. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.

*Thank you NetGalley and OrangeSky Audio for the audiobook to review*

3.5 stars rounded up.

To me, this book is broken up into two sections: One separated by month detailing ways Lowry chose kindness towards herself despite obstacles and two largely "kindness" tactics or topics that were further elaborated on. I found the first half to be much more enjoyable and would've enjoyed the book more as a whole had it continued with that formatting even if extended past one calendar year.

The audiobook itself didn't hold my attention consistently throughout and I found myself getting used, particularly during the second section of the book.
