Savage Sin by Helen Hardt, Helen Hardt
3.0
Savage Sin is the tragic story between Falcon 'Savage' Bellamy and Savannah 'Vannah' Gallo. The two find themselves on opposite sides of the law; Falcon is an ex-con trying to find redemption after completing an 8-year sentence for involuntary manslaughter. Savannah is the parole officer assigned to Falcon's case.
From their first meeting, instance attraction sparked the fires between them, unable to resist the passion and the urge. Given that it's highly unethical, Falcon and Vallan shield their romance from the outside world; however, the two continue to run into one another at unexpected times throughout the book.
I wanted to like this story more, but it felt a little flat. The steamy scenes were spicy, but I couldn't connect to the characters for some reason. I ended up finishing this read in just a few hours as it was easy to digest. I would have liked a little more character development and more angst between Falcon and Vannah. I will also note that this story ends with an unexpected cliffhanger, but I'm not sure if I would continue the series. Overall, it was a good read, but just needed a little more oomph.

The Pieces We Leave Behind by Elle Mitchell
4.0
The Pieces We Leave Behind is a beautiful story about a girl who wants to be happy and better herself after life continues to throw curveball after curveball. Maddie finds herself at ends meet after the tragic loss of her grandmother. On top of that, her boyfriend treats her like dirt, taking her for granted. So, she leaves it all behind-hoping for new beginnings in a small town. I knew I would enjoy this book after the first chapter and was utterly hooked! Maddie's life is not easy, but I genuinely admire her. She is a strong FMC who didn't run away - she dealt with all her problems, knowing she had to face them. Once she met Ezra, that was it. I was swooning for days!
EZRA is the perfect hero. He knew precisely what Maddie needed. The two gravitated toward each other, causing emotions to stir inside me as I read their chemistry vibrate off each page. The spice level was just what it needed to be; not too spicy but enough to keep the reader engaged. This was a very emotional read, and the writing was superb. Elle Mitchell's words allow her readers to experience the tragedy, the heartache, the emotion, the love, and the passion. Highly recommend this one, and I also plan to read the author's backlist.

Break for Me by Ember Nicole
4.0
I'm not sure how to start with this review. I knew this book would be wild since I learned about Ember's writing style. I was unprepared for all I experienced while reading this book. The level of emotion while reading this story was utterly unhinged.
Readers are first introduced to Trista and Jersey. Trista has been on the run for years and will do anything to protect herself - anything. She is a strong FMC who knows how to be manipulative and slither her way toward safety. Jersey is a bounty hunter assigned to find Trista and use measures of no mercy to bring her back.
As soon as the two enemies come face to face, it's an all-out war. Jersey is the best man; he's also a trained killer to get the job done, and Trista truly meets her match. I loved their banter and sarcasm and the brewing hate between them, but as each page turned, the hate became a heated passion, filled with a dark, slow burn that sent all sorts of butterflies through my body. Jersey is one HOT hunter, and I will gladly volunteer as tribute to have him come scoop me up and take me with him. The spicy scenes were SPICY, and I was all for it. The words that came out of that man..yeah pantie dropping for sure!
If you're a fan of dark romance with elements of the enemies-to-lovers trope that are forced to be in close proximity, you will love this one!

Two Nights In August by Cecelia Conway
4.0
Two Nights in August is the fourth novel in the Door County Dreams series and can be read as a standalone. I did not read the books prior, and even though there were minimal mentions of the previous book's events, it did not take away from the primary focus of this story.
With that said, this is my first read from Cecelia Conway, and it was a pleasant surprise! The story unfolds between Sarah and Bret, two souls facing extreme difficulties and odds, finding their way to one another. Sarah faces defeat and poor life choices after her long-time boyfriend is discovered cheating on her. She turns to her best friend, Bret, who has been hiding his feelings from her throughout their friendship, and the two make a pact to begin fake dating. The two friends grow closer once Sarah moves in with Bret. As Sarah's walls start to break around Bret, a secret Bret keeps from her can cause their blooming romance and friendship to crumble forever.
This was a cute read, and I enjoyed Bret and Sarah's small-town vibe and budding romance. I am also going to read the first three books of the series. Highly recommend this one.

Love and Order: An Enemies to Lovers Romance by Stella Holt
5.0
Stella Holt continues to excel with this series, and this has been my favorite of the series! Love and Order is the fourth book of the Legacy of the Maguires series, and I knew I would love this book. This is an enemies-to-lovers vibe with the workplace romance setting, so I was ready for it!
Finn is the youngest of the Maguire siblings who recently obtained his JD (law degree) after his time with the US Navy Seals ended. After he secures his first job as an associate at a prestigious law firm in Washington, D.C., he meets a fellow associate, Hailey Adams. The two find themselves at odds when the firm decides to promote one of them to junior partner. Eager to earn a promotion, a workplace battle ensues between them as they find themselves on opposite sides.
Finn is immediately attracted to Hailey but knows that if he complicates things, it can end up bad for both of them. Little did he know that Hailey thought the same! Hailey has a dark past filled with struggle and anguish. She has learned to only depend on herself and not trust others, but as Finn shows her that he is not like the other guys, her walls slowly crack, allowing Finn to step inside and be the hero she deserves. I just LOVED the relationship blossom between the two of them. I was rooting for Finn the entire time. He was indeed a gentleman and genuine with Hailey's thoughts and emotions. Even though Hailey endured a lot of trauma in her past, she was so strong, and I loved how she always protected herself, even if it meant shedding those walls. I highly recommend this one!

Bitter Prince by Eva Winners
4.0
Eva Winners completely blew me away with this book. This is my first read from Eva, and now I need to go back and read her backlist. Bitter Price is the story of Amon and Reina, two souls who met young in the mafia world of danger, violence, deadly secrets, and hidden pasts. Amon is the illegitimate son of a Japanese woman and an Italian mobster. As Amon grows older, his whole world revolves around his revenge plot against the Romero family. Given his mixed heritage, he finds himself alone and unable to rightfully join the mafia family and be suitable enough as a husband for Reina.
The two forbidden lovers fight their way against the attraction for one another, and let me say that the intensity between them sets fire to each page! They each have their demons and secrets, with hearts full of despair, but they bring out the best in one another, vowing to protect each other. My emotions were all over the place while reading this story. At times, I shed a tear for Amon - he dealt with so much BS throughout this story, and Reina just wanted to be strong enough for him. The heated scenes were passionate, and Amon had a filthy mouth on him - I loved it!
I promise you will love this one if you're a fan of mafia romance with elements of darkness, spice, and twists and turns!

The Two Week Roommate by Roxie Noir
4.0
Roxie Noir never fails to disappoint. As new releases are announced, I get so excited - eager to see where her stories take us next!
The Two Week Roommate is the 2nd book of the Wildwood Society series, but it can be read as a standalone novel. The story between two ex-best friends, Gideon and Andi, takes readers on a new adventure after 20 years of no contact. Gideon is a forest ranger assigned to rescue Andi after she ties herself to a tree. - Yes she crazy. The unfortunate winter blizzard leaves them stranded, forced to spend two weeks together in a cozy cabin in the middle of the woods.
The banter between them was the best thing about this book. I loved how hilarious Andi was, as she has no filter whatsoever. Gideon was a strong hero with a dark and hidden past. His sensitivity caused emotions to stir, and I found myself rooting for the two of them very early on. There is also an unexpected seriousness to their story, which challenges the readers, allowing them to uncover Gideon's past, filled with emotional trauma caused by his parents and extreme religious beliefs.
I really enjoyed this one and will recommend it to anyone who loves second-chance stories with an element of forced proximity.

Overdue: A Small Town Romance by Avery Samson
4.0
Avery Samson surprised me with this one. Overdue is a blossoming enemies-to-lovers romance between Reed and Austen that started during their childhood. Austen is a feisty 12-year-old girl who caught the eyes of Reed, but instead of charming him with her smile, she breaks his nose upon their first meeting, starting a war that lasted for decades. The two find themselves on opposite sides of their small town as they have to navigate around one another, fighting the sensations and urges that heat their feelings.
Reed is a cocky war hero returning to his small town to care for his ill grandmother. Austen is the local librarian, aspiring to be an author but still filled with spitfire and an internal monologue that had me laughing out loud. They have a rollercoaster of a relationship as the banter between them is constant, filled with annoyance and silly bickering, but as the two grow closer, they learn to rely on one another. Reed's inability to control his words before he thinks results in Austen's instant need for food fights and broken noses. This was a fun read and I truly adored it. The characters were well written and the plot was developed. Overall, a good read from a new to me author. I plan to read more from Avery Samson!

You're So Bad by Angela Casella
4.0
We all know that trouble is just around the corner when the wedding invitation to your ex and ex-best friend arrives...on top of that - arrange for the tattooed bad boy to pretend to be your boyfriend. Shauna finds herself in these exact shoes and decides to jump off the deep end head first. She knows that Leonard is bad news yet delicious in so many ways. She also knows their arrangement will only end up in smoke, or will it be a scoring five-alarm fire?
This is a romantic comedy, and the humor was on point. I laughed out loud many times throughout this novel. The chemistry between Shauna and Leonard is sizzling and radiates off each page. They each have their own hidden pasts and emotional trauma that lead them to unlock emotions and triggers that neither of them was prepared for. I loved how supportive they were of each other during the emotional elements of the story. The spicy scenes were SPICY - just what the doctor ordered. Overall, I enjoyed this one and look forward to the series' next story!

Love Like Poison by Charmaine Pauls
4.0
Wow! This series starts with an unexpected bang, and I am here for it! Love Like Poison is my first read from Charmaine Pauls and won't be the last. Readers are introduced to Sabella and Angelo, two teens on opposite sides of the mafia's underground crime world.
Sabella is innocent, forced to be used as a tool against her family. Angelo sees her beauty immediately upon meeting her, and the two are leveraged as options for marriage between the two families. Sabella's father broke the promise of marriage, causing Angelo and Sabella to part ways, but not before Angelo could enact a revenge plan. Once Sabella turns 18, Angelo's plan is in motion, and Sabella is caught in the middle of a war filled with manipulation, betrayal, violence, and darkness.
Even though most of the story revolves around Sabella's age from 16-18 - this is not a young adult story. It is dark, gritty, and spicy! Angelo is dark, brooding, arrogant, and so obsessed with having the woman he's always desired it's hard not to root for him. Their relationship was filled with a toxic 'poison' fueled by anger between their families, Angelo's anger toward her father, and Sabella's darkened innocence. The story has a well-developed plot, and I was pleasantly surprised by this modern retelling of Romeo & Juliet. Given that it's the first of the series - an epic cliffhanger is bound to happen! I am so ready for the next book!!
