Interesting, but...

This is an incredibly well researched book, but I felt like a LOT of time was spent convincing us we need to sleep. I was convinced. Still, some good tips and research.

On the up side, at least someone gave this book to me for free.

I went in really wanting to like this book because I completely agree with its premise, i.e., more sleep is better for us all. But I don't think the book is particularly well written or even all that compelling. I say that because I really don't feel like I LEARNED many new things. This book very much reminds me of a freshman composition essay where the author has strong convictions that are repeated several times but the evidence is suspect and weak. For instance, Huffington writes, "From the beginning of time, people have struggled with sleep." Honestly. That's on page 197. In addition, there are scattered quotes from different pieces of fiction . . . although I am not really sure why.

Look: I am totally on board with the main idea: GO TO BED, PEOPLE. But this book didn't convince me of it.

I am bad at getting enough sleep. After reading Thrive, I had pretty high hopes that this book would offer some new insight that would help me get better at prioritizing sleep. It is a good overview about the problem of not getting enough sleep and she does list a lot of resources in the back. I guess it could be described as a good starting point. It just wasn't as deep as I was hoping. I felt like she touched on everything a little and then moved on to another topic. It was still well researched and a decent read if you're interested in sleep.

Barely 3 stars. Wished the author had narrated it herself but alas. She picked a lady with a weird accent to narrate the book. It was actually pretty distracting.

If you want to learn more about sleep then [b:Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams|34466963|Why We Sleep Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams|Matthew Walker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1556604137l/34466963._SY75_.jpg|55587034] was much better. But she did talk about Inception so that was a plus.

Notes:

If you're driving on the highway at 60MPH and close your eyes for 4 seconds, your car will have traveled the length of a football field. I love doing this while I bike or drive.

We yawn when we anticipate something happening. That makes sense why I get tired before games and events.

The two purposes of dreams are to solve problems in a dreamer's everyday life and to help dreamers be less consumed by their worldly problems so they can connect with a spiritual dimension in a higher reality.

This did not feel groundbreaking or "boldly assertive." It felt like it was just spitting out research findings without really adding anything to it. Some interesting stuff for sure, but overall I felt like it didn't add much to news articles I have skimmed about sleep.

Easily readable, and full of lots of information about why sleep is important. A great introduction to the concept/topic!

A fun read on the importance of sleep--very one sided, but a side I don't hear from much.

Good history of sleep--fun and mostly playful.

Pleasant over view of the current state of sleep thinking.

Lots of personal antidotes and stuff--I don't know who the author is--she assumes we are all big fans of her work--but other then that a mostly harmless airplane read.

This book was more about why we need sleep rather than how to sleep better. I kept waiting for more suggestions and they never came. It was just emphasizing the same points over and over again. I feel like if you pick up this book, you already know there are sleep issues in our society so it isn't shedding any new light.

The research on the history of sleep and how the lack thereof affects us all today was really interesting. The tips on better sleep in this book are ones that I read about more and more now but there were a lot of resources at the back of the book that were new to me and helpful. Definitely recommend!

While this book doesn’t break new ground, what it does is lay out the idea of sleep and the science around it in a convincing way. I’ve always gotten poor sleep and feel inspired after reading this to make changes to my sleep hygiene and general attitude about sleep.
